LADIES FIRST (2025): The Things I Liked…

There I was, fully convinced I was never going to encounter a Groundhog Day (1993)type movie that I liked, except Groundhog Day itself. Then, Ladies First happened.

I’m not saying that Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike’s latest comedy is close to the best thing I’ve seen in 2026. But I found it a pleasant watch that kept me engaged until the end.

The story follows Damien (Cohen), a male chauvinist who is transported to a matriarchal society, where he faces challenges at the hands of a formidable female counterpart.

I found director Thea Sharrock’s film charming. I also loved the British talent involved, especially Fiona Shaw. It was a fun exercise, perhaps for ladies, especially, to see Damien’s world flipped upside down. I certainly found it satisfying to see an empowered and confident version of Pike’s character, as unlovable as some of her actions or attitudes may have been.

Give Ladies First a chance when the mood for some easy-viewing fun hits.

IN THE GREY (2026): New Trailer Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill, Rosamund Pike, Jason Wong, Eiza González…

In the Grey stars Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal as elite operatives tasked with stealing back a billion-dollar fortune, resulting in a deadly game of strategy, deception and survival.

Rosamund Pike, Jason Wong and Eiza González are among the key cast.

Like every Guy Ritchie movie, this trailer too immediately piqued my interest, thanks to the rhythm, dialogue, and music.

When it comes to my favourite performances by American actors in Ritchie movies, my favourite is Matthew McConaughey in The Gentlemen (2020), then Brad Pitt in Snatch (2000), Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes (2009), then Jake Gyllenhaal in The Covenant (2023). Perhaps In the Grey will be a second entry for Gyllenhaal.

What’s your favourite performance by an American actor in a Guy Ritchie film?

Emmett J. Scanlan, Fisher Stevens, Kristofer Hivju, Kojo Attah Carlos Bardem, Darrell D’Silva, Christian Ochoa Lavernia, Karlos Klaumannsmoller, Cory Douglas Campbell and Mohammed Al Turki, Gonzalo Bouza also star.

I CARE A LOT (2020): The Things I Liked…

I Care a Lot (2020), Rosamund Pike, Amazon Prime Video
I Care a Lot (2020), Rosamund Pike, Amazon Prime Video

I knew that crime/thriller I Care a Lot was about Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike), a despicable woman who takes pleasure in draining the savings of her vulnerable elderly clients. What I didn’t know is I’d end up detesting Marla quite as much as I did.

To say I was extra impatient to see her get her comeuppance feels like an understatement. Furthermore, I’m not sure if I’ve ever been more incensed by a character the way I was with Marla. OK, maybe Guy Pierce’s Charley Rakes in Lawless (2012) is even more despicable. I mean, I truly, deeply hated him. I digress.

Written/directed by J. Blakeson, I Care a Lot is generally well-acted. However, there are parts of the story I didn’t fully buy. Specifically, occurrences that seemed to happen how they did, simply to serve the plot. Only, ironically, they ended up doing the movie a disservice because I didn’t believe them. Much of this takes place once Marla became more involved with Peter Dinklage’s character.

There are very few, if any, clear-cut ‘good people’ in this movie. This is a truth that made watching I Care a Lot more uncomfortable than anticipated. Maybe I wouldn’t have felt so slightly shortchanged had I been able to connect more with any character’s story, so I could identify with them on a less-than-surface level.

As for my favourite things about Blakeson’s film, Chris Messina is great as the Lawyer and I found Marla’s style delightfully noteworthy; as is her general badassery. There’s no doubt that her place in the list of tough female movie characters sporting blunt bobs has a corner in my mind. I only wish it had one in my heart too.

Watch I Care a Lot if you’re curious.

I CARE A LOT (2020): New Trailer Starring Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage, Eiza González, Dianne Wiest…

I Care a Lot (2020), Rosamund Pike, Amazon Prime Video

Read my spoiler-free movie review of  I Care a Lot (2021).

New crime/thriller, I Care a Lot is about a crooked legal guardian named Marla Grayson (Rosamund Pike). A woman who drains the savings of her elderly wards; only this time she’s met her match, because Jennifer Peterson, her latest target is far more than what she appears.

Written/directed by J. Blakeson; additional key cast includes Dianne Wiest, Peter Dinklage, Eiza González, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Chris Messina.

Looks like Pike is returning to the type of unhinged character she seems to play so well; as demonstrated by her turn as Amy Dunne in Gone Girl (2014). And I have to say, I’m not mad about it one bit.

Seeing Marla get what she deserves is why I’ll be watching this. Fingers crossed it turns out great.

Lastly, while this trailer played, did you also suddenly think that a blunt bob cut might be a good idea?

Macon Blair, Alicia Witt, Damian Young, Nicholas Logan, Liz Eng, Celeste Oliva, Georgia Lyman, Moira Driscoll and Gary Tanguay also star.

I Care a Lot Release Dates: February 19th, 2021 (US), Amazon Prime Video…

RADIOACTIVE (2020): New Trailer From Rosamund Pike, Anya Taylor-Joy, Aneurin Barnard…

Radioactive (2020), Rosamund Pike, Studio Canal UK
Radioactive (2020), Rosamund Pike, Studio Canal UK

Directed by Marjane Satrapi, Radioactive stars Rosamund Pike, Anya Taylor-Joy and Aneurin Barnard.

Satrapi’s film is the biography of Marie and Pierre Curie; a pair whose scientific discovery of radium went on to win the Nobel Prize in 1903.

Before this trailer, I’d definitely heard of the Curies. I just couldn’t quite remember what their precise scientific accomplishments are. The shame!

Luckily, with the help of this movie, hopefully, I won’t forget again.

Simon Russell Beale, Sam Riley, Jonathan Aris, Corey Johnson, Mirjam Novak, Harriet Turnbull, Demetri Goritsas, Cara Bossom, Tim Woodward, Indica Watson and Peter Sztojanov Jr. also star.

Radioactive Release Dates: March 20th, 2020 (UK)…
