THE MARTIAN (2015): Another Space Sci-Fi Hit Is Coming…

The new film from Ridley Scott, director of many hit films including Gladiator (2000) stars Matt Damon and it looks amazing.

As excited as I undoubtedly am, something tells me I’m probably going to get my heart broken, and by that I don’t mean I’ll be disappointed but that something similar to the end of 1998’s Armageddon might happen.

I’d of course much rather be pleasantly surprised than have that particular theory come to fruition.

Then again, on the other hand, whatever it takes for the film to be great is what I really, really want. As such, I surrender.

Bring on November!

PIXELS (2015) Trailer 2, Definitely More Promising

Pixels (2015) Pac-Man, Toru Iwatani

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Pixels(2015).

In Pixels, which stars Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage –  aliens have sent real life video games to end us by pixelation – and of course we must fight! Or at least the best players of each video game character  turned evil must.

The first trailer had me worried, but now…

…I badly want to see it work.

JUPITER ASCENDING (2015): What I Enjoyed Most? Mila Kunis’ Royal Outfits…

Jupiter Ascending (2015), Mila Kunis
Jupiter Ascending (2015), Mila Kunis

Directed by the Wachowskis, the duo behind The Matrix (1999) trilogy, and starring Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean and Eddie Redmayne, I had relatively high hopes for how Jupiter Ascending would turn out… admittedly, mostly because of Redmayne.

After the event, however, it would be quite the stretch for me to call Jupiter Ascending a ‘good film’ – though there are some things I enjoyed. Namely, Mila Kunis’ royal outfits, the visuals of Jupiter and the rather disturbingly good theory about ‘harvesting’ planet earth.

Everything else was just unconvincing. I found myself unable to properly buy into any of the characters, let alone the central love story.

Usually, I can suspend my disbelief given that a story is executed well – whether it be sci-fi, fantasy, etc. That’s just not completely the case here.

I still like Kunis, especially in That 70s Show, Family Guy and Black Swan (2010) – just not in Jupiter Ascending. Definitely not in Jupiter Ascending. Now, go and re-watchThe Matrix instead.

PREDESTINATION (2014): Why You Need To Be Ready

Predestination (2014), Ethan Hawke
Predestination (2014), Ethan Hawke

Predestination is a well acted mystery/sci-fi film, starring Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook and written/directed by film making brothers Michael and Peter Spierig;

Due to the time travelling element, this is the kind of movie with plenty going on, including a number of twists and turns that come quick and fast, so you’ll certainly need to be ready and alert.

As I watched, I found myself comparing Predestination to it’s more thrilling cousin, Inception (2010). Not that both films deal with the same subject matter exactly, but among other things, it didn’t help that one of the characters in the movie looked like a younger version of one of the Actors in Inception. I’ll let you figure out which one.

Watch it anyway if science fiction, and particularly time travel are generally your thing. As for me, I’m only into sci-fi sometimes.

INTERSTELLAR (2014): As Expected, Christopher Nolan Did It Again. It’s Good

Interstellar (2014) Matthew McConaughey
Interstellar (2014) Matthew McConaughey

I finally did it. I watched Interstellar! The nearly three hour running time is part of the reason why I hadn’t yet. Plus, I believe it important to be in the right mood for a particular type of film before watching.

From Christopher Nolan, the director who brought us the hugely successful Inception (2010) and the recent Batman trilogy, the cast for Interstellar includes Matthew McConaughey, Ann Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, to name just a few.

Nolan has once more delivered a memorable film. One that features some stunning space imagery, a handful of nail biting/tense moments – and at the heart, a powerful and extraordinary father/daughter love story.

If you happen to be into astronomy and science, you’ll likely love this film even more, because it covers space exploration for the purpose of saving human kind from extinction – and it’s not afraid to dive into the science.

Like Inception (2010), Interstellar deals with a few non-simplistic concepts and therefore requires your full attention. I think I managed to keep up quite well, even though science isn’t my subject. That said, please be so kind as to not test my knowledge because I will fail. Thank you.
