THE AFTERMATH (2019): Costume Design – Keira Knightley’s Beautiful Outfits…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The Aftermath (2019)

Today’s post is a celebration of my favourite of Keira Knightley’s beautiful outfits in The Aftermath (2019). I adore the clothes and the glorious way they’re lit and framed. A big hooray for costume designer Bojana Nikitovic!

The Aftermath (2019), Keira Knightley

This green jacket, white blouse and silver brooch look is my absolute favourite.

Once more with an elegant hat.

I’m sure it’s not at all often that cardigans have looked this good. Am I right or am I right? That double red line detail really makes it for me.

I’ve always known that yellow and red were meant to be together. That beautiful hint of blue certainly adds a very nice touch.

Silk/satin and that light. This image may not show much, but I know you know the yellow halterneck dress is just stunning.

Classic and classy are the words for the blue coat and white shirt. Also, who doesn’t want to be in a restaurant as well-lit as this one right here.

Do you happen to have a favourite Knightley outfit? It’s OK if your answer is ‘all of them,’ because that’s my answer too.

THE AFTERMATH (2019): The Things I Liked…

Set in Hamberg, Germany; in director James Kent’s post-WWII drama The Aftermath, Jason Clarke plays British colonel Lewis Morgan.

Morgan is assigned to live in Hamberg where his wife Rachael (Keira Knightly) reluctantly agrees to join him. The house provided to the colonel is occupied by German architect Stephen (Alexander Skarsgård) and his daughter, both of whom now have to move out with the arrival of the British couple. It’s the resultant tensions between the film’s characters inside and outside the house that helped keep me interested in Kent’s film.

I like the way parts of Kent’s movie are lit, shot and edited. The latter, particularly regarding the truth of the nature of Morgan’s relationship with his wife.

Even though The Aftermath is set during quite a sad time for many of the characters, I didn’t find the experience of watching the movie to be especially depressing, which is probably thanks to all the romance. I mean, they do say that there’s nothing quite like love to lift one’s spirits.

In addition to the romance, I adored the gorgeous main house in which several scenes are shot. It certainly proved a welcome contrast to all the bombing rubble outside. Another highlight I noticed at the trailer stage is Rachael’s attire. It seems as though Knightley always gets to wear great clothing in her movies. Perhaps it’s written into her contract. Either that or she just has the ability to make clothes look fantastic. The latter definitely seems more likely.

Watch The Aftermath if you’re curious. It’s not perfect but there are things to like about it. One thing you may realise by the end is just how perfect the film’s title really is – considering all the various ‘aftermaths’ within.

SHADOW (2019): New Trailer From Director Yimou Zhang And Starring Chao Deng, Li Sun, Ryan Zheng…

Shadow (2018), Well Go USA Entertainment

Yimou Zhang, celebrated director of Hero (2002) and House of Flying Daggers (2004) has a new wuxia (martial heroes) action movie.

Starring Chao Deng, Li Sun, Ryan Zheng and set in a kingdom ruled by a young and unpredictable king, the military commander has a secret weapon, a look-alike who can fool both his enemies and the king himself.

The visuals in this trailer are impressive and the story has me curious. Yet, I must still confess that I’m probably most looking forward to the spectacle of the ‘bladed umbrella weapon.’ I’m ready.

Qianyuan Wang, Jingchun Wang, Jun Hu, Xiaotong Guan, Lei Wu and Bai Feng also star.

Directed by James Kent; The Aftermath is a World War II drama/romance starring  Keira Knightley, Aleksander Skarsgård and Jason Clarke.

At the centre of the story is a British colonel and his wife who are assigned to live in Hamburg, Germany during the post-war reconstruction. Tensions soon arise between them and the German who previously owned the house.

It’s probably too early to say it but I may already have my favourite trailer of this month. This story looks so very compelling thanks to the edit, music, cast, etc. There’s also the fashion. I’m definitely already loving all the clothes and coats on Knightley.

Kate Phillips, Jannik Schümann, Fionn O’Shea and Tom Bell also star.

The Aftermath Release Dates: March 1st, 2019 (UK); April 26th, 2019 (US)…

WHERE HANDS TOUCH (2018): New Trailer From Amandla Stenberg, Abbie Cornish, Christopher Eccleston, George MacKay…

Where Hands Touch (2018), Amandla Stenberg
Where Hands Touch (2018), Amandla Stenberg

Written/directed by Amma Asante (Belle 2013) and inspired by true events, Where Hands Touch is the story of Leyna, a bi-racial teen struggling for survival in Nazi Germany.

Key cast includes Amandla Stenberg, Abbie Cornish, Christopher Eccleston and George MacKay.

The phrase ‘inspired by true events’ has me wondering about the actual truth that inspired this story. This movie may move me as much as Belle did. What I’m almost certain of is that this story will break my heart.

Tom Goodman-Hill, Alec Newman, Olivia Vinall, Will Attenborough and Simon Harrison also star.

Where Hands Touch Release Dates: September 14th, 2018 (US); 2018 (UK)…
