Uncut Gems is comedy / crime / drama set in New York City’s diamond district. A place where you’ll find jewellery store owner and dealer to the rich and famous, Howard Ratner.

Directed by Josh and Benny Safdie; Starring Adam Sandler, LaKeith Stanfield, Idina Menzel and Julia Fox, Howard must find a way to pay his debts when his merchandise is taken from one of his top sellers and girlfriend…

I like energy, much of what I see in this trailer, and I need to know how things work out for Howard. I’m also in to see Sandler do well in a non- purely comic role.

The Weeknd, Jonathan Aranbayev, Jacob Igielski, Noa Fisher, Paloma Elsesser, Eric Bogosian, Keith Williams Richards, Tommy Kominik, Louis Anthony Arias and Sean Ringgold also star.

MURDER MYSTERY (2019): The Things I Liked…

Murder Mystery (2019), Jennifer Aniston, Adam Sandler, Netflix
Murder Mystery (2019), Jennifer Aniston, Adam Sandler, Netflix

There’s no denying that Murder Mystery, the latest movie from Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler gave me some laughs. The Kyle Newacheck-directed comedy about an American couple who find themselves framed for murder while on a European vacation definitely brought the Sandler/Aniston on-screen magic.

To elaborate, even though the murder investigation scenes barely proved engaging, I really liked the moments when it was just Aniston and Sandler’s characters talking to each other. Their comedy dynamic as a married couple is great. In fact, I’m almost certain that if Murder Mystery had just been Aniston and Sandler’s characters finally taking a vacation in Europe; bickering among themselves, enjoying and learning about the billionaire lifestyle but definitely minus the murder mystery elements, I’d probably have liked this movie much more.

There was indeed room for the murder mystery to be better executed. Or, perhaps that portion of this story just proved too cliché for me to appreciate. Nevertheless, I have no regrets because of the moments I did enjoy. Moments that also include the joke on the plane about the alternative earplug suggestion and the scenes with Aniston and/or Sandler that featured Luke Evans’s very charming Charles Cavendish character.

Last but not least, one more key highlight is when I saw British comic David Walliams show up on screen. A truly joy-inducing moment for me personally because his character transported me back to the times when I watched his great work in the BBC’s hit comedy series Little Britain.

I say watch Murder Mystery if you’re curious about the highlights mentioned above. Maybe you’ll love it all even though I couldn’t.

MURDER MYSTERY (2019): New Trailer From Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Luke Evans, Gemma Aterton…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Murder Mystery (2019)

Murder Mystery is a new action/comedy starring Jennifer Aniston, Adam Sandler, Luke Evans and Gemma Aterton.

Directed by Kyle Newacheck; Sandler is a cop on a European vacation with his wife (Aniston) when they end up on the run after being framed for murder.

I like Aniston and Sandler on screen together, and I actually can’t wait to find out who the murderer really is. I’m thinking that if the answer isn’t ‘all of them – except the Americans’, it’s probably Evans’s character. I’ve already ruled out the general with the eyepatch because it would be too obvious. You know, considering his deliberate handling of the murder weapon in front of everyone.

John Kani , Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Jackie Sandler, Terence Stamp and Mike Joseph also star.

THE WEEK OF (2018): It’s…

The Week Of (2018), Allison Strong, Adam Sandler, Rachel Dratch
The Week Of (2018), Allison Strong, Adam Sandler, Rachel Dratch

I tried. I really tried to stick it out with The Week Of but I’m afraid I had to bail.

The one thing I enjoyed about the forty five minutes I could actually sit through is the opening music. The music gave me hope which unfortunately turned out to be misplaced.

The portion of the film I managed to sit through felt very much like one of the early, very early rehearsals before any of the delivery was polished enough for public consumption. The storytelling, editing, pacing and jokes all left me with plenty to be desired.  Maybe I’ve seen too many well delivered jokes in my film viewing experience, that none of the cliches are funny any more, especially when not executed well.

One of the most annoying things in a film or comedy is when a joke is dragged out for too long. There were a few moments there, where I thought, ‘we get the intended joke. Please cut this annoying scene already and move on’.

There’s one particular actor who really over did it with her performance to disastrously unfunny proportions. However, of all the sins this film committed, the worst of it may be that it made a handful of usually effective comedy actors look pretty bad and unskilled; Rachel Dratch being one example.

I think it’s time I accept that Sandler’s best work may well be far behind him. The Week Of is absolutely at the very bottom of all the Adam Sandler movies I’ve ever seen. It’s also the only one I couldn’t sit through to the very end.

Watch it ONLY if you absolutely must. Otherwise go watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) Instead.

The Week Of (2018), Chris Rock, Adam Sandler

The Week Of is a new Robert Smigel directed comedy where Adam Sandler and Chris Rock play parents of a soon-to-be married couple.

Also starring Steve Buscemi, we join the parents as they make the final preparations for the looming wedding ceremony…

I’m in because I love Rock, enjoy Sandler and adore being a guest at weddings. How could one not watch, really? I also rather appreciated seeing the punch line for the joke about the air- conditioning coming. It landed well, if I say so myself.

Rob Morgan, Rachel Dratch, Scott Cohen, Rob Morgan, Melanie Nicholls-King and Roland Buck III make up some of the key additional cast.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3 – SUMMER VACATION (2018): New Trailer From Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi…

Hotel Transylvania 3 (2018).
Hotel Transylvania 3 (2018).

Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez and Steve Buscemi are back in the third instalment of the Genndy Tartakovsky directed Hotel Transylvania 3.

This time the action takes place away from the vacation hotel and instead, everything happens on a luxury monster cruise ship.

The monster family are all having a great time catching up on their moon tans, but then Drac goes and falls for the mysterious captain of the ship, Ericka and everything changes.

I’ll be tuning in for the ‘easy viewing light entertainment’. I’ll probably also be wondering whose accent I love more; Adam Sandler as Drac in the his Hotel Transylvania movies or Steve Carell as Gru in the Despicable Me films. Both are pretty great to be honest.

Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Keegan-Michael Key, David Spade and David Spade also star.

Hotel Transylvania 3 – Summer Vacation Release Dates: July 13th, 2018 (US); July 27th, 2018 (UK)

THE MEYEROWITZ STORIES – NEW & SELECTED (2017): New Trailer From Adam Sandler, Grace Van Patten, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson…

The Meyerowitz Stories – New & Selected (2017), Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller

Starring Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson and Adam Sandler; The Meyerowitz Stories – New & Selected is the latest from writer / director Noah Baumbach. Stiller, Hoffman, Sandler and Thompson play members of an estranged family that gathers in New York for an event celebrating the artistic work of their father…

I particularly like the idea of Stiller, Sandler and Hoffman performing together. I’m also in for the family dynamics that’ll undoubtedly result in interesting conflict; not that I like to see family members fight, you understand…

SANDY WEXLER (2017): New Trailer From Adam Sandler, Jennifer Hudson, Terry Crews…

Starring Adam Sandler, Jennifer Hudson, Terry Crews and directed by Steven Brill, Sandy Wexler is a 1990s set star-crossed love story, where a devoted talent agent who manages several eccentric clients falls in love with his latest signing, a very talented singer played by Jennifer Hudson…

I’m not one of those people who isn’t an Adam Sandler fan. Granted I don’t love all of his movies but since I enjoyed most of his earlier ones and I didn’t hate Funny People (2009) or Blended (2014), I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt. Fingers crossed that we all enjoy this new one.

Chris Rock, Conan O’brien, Jane Seymour, Kevin James and Vanilla Ice also star.
