THE LAND OF STEADY HABITS (2018): The Things I Liked…

The Land Of Steady Habits is the story of Anders (Ben Mendelsohn), a man who retires from his finance job and leaves his wife in order to renew his lust for life. However, things don’t quite go as smoothly as hoped for poor Anders.

Directed by Nicole Holofcener, this story feels very real and true. It features a fair number of lost and hurt/hurting people trying. It also features those who don’t appear to be trying especially hard.

Outside of Anders, whose journey intrigued me, I wanted to know more about why each person was behaving the way they were, but we never got to know about what made up the other lost and hurting people in Anders’s circle. Certainly not as much as my curious mind desired, anyway.

The unexpectedness of the humour in Holfcener’s film, the good performances and the unpredictability of the very human story is why I liked it. In addition to confirming that Mendelsohn’s American accent isn’t bad, The Land Of Steady Habits reminds me of how invaluable good family and friendships are, especially when things don’t quite work out.

Give it a chance if the protagonist’s situation intrigues you. It’s a little bit of a slow burn, just as life can be sometimes, but not slow enough that I wanted to stop before the end.

THE LAND OF STEADY HABITS (2018): New Trailer From Ben Mendelsohn, Edie Falco, Natalie Gold, Connie Britton, Thomas Mann…

A man retires from his job in finance and leaves his wife in the hopes that it will renew his lust for life, but things don’t quite go according to plan.

Written/directed by Nicole Holofcener, key cast includes Ben Mendelsohn, Edie Falco, Natalie Gold, Connie Britton and Thomas Mann.

I’m curious because the cast is good. I’m also intrigued by Mendelsohn’s American accent.

Lastly, my nosy side wants to know the secret Mendelsohn’s character seems to be hiding. There may be no secret at all, which would also be fine.

READY PLAYER ONE (2018): New Trailer From Steven Spielberg Starring Tye Sheridan,  T.J. Miller, Ben Mendelsohn, Hannah John-Kamen…

Ready Player One (2018)
Ready Player One (2018)

In Steven Spielberg’s latest movie Ready Player One, gamers compete inside a massive video game universe to find an ‘Easter egg’ (item, trivia or surprise buried within the game) hidden by the network’s recently deceased creator.

The finder of the Easter egg is promised the creator’s fortune. Soon enough Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) becomes the first player to successfully navigate the first level of the test, leading to a high-stakes international race to crack the game’s code.

Based on the novel by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One also stars  Hannah John-KamenT.J. MillerBen Mendelsohn, Simon Pegg and Mark Rylance.

I haven’t read the book, so my mind is threatening to race with all the twists, turns and obstacles the story is likely to have, to keep things interesting.

The promising special effects are another key reason to watch. I refuse to let Spielberg’s last disappointing movie (The BFG, 2016) prevent me from getting excited. As such, I declare that I’m officially looking forward to this story.

Ready Player One Release Dates: March 30th, 2018 (US & UK)…

DARKEST HOUR (2017): New Trailer From Gary Oldman, Lily James, Ben Mendelsohn, Kristin Scott Thomas…

Darkest Hour is directed by Joe Wright (Atonement (2007) and stars Gary Oldman, Lily James, Ben Mendelsohn and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Wright’s movie tells the story of Winston Churchill’s most defining trial: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation.

I’ll see this because Oldman is great and it sounds as though he may have nailed Churchill’s voice. There’s also Churchill’s very famous inspirational quotes to look forward to.

Darkest Hour Release Dates: November 22nd, 2017 (US); January 12th, 20018 (UK)…

I AM HEATH LEDGER (2017): New Trailer For Heath Ledger Documentary

I Am Heath Ledger (2017)
I Am Heath Ledger (2017)

You’d think that I’d be more than ready to watch a documentary about the very talented late actor Heath Ledger, nearly ten years after his untimely passing, but you’d be wrong. His deservedly revered performance in The Dark Knight (2008), remains one of the best character embodiments I’ve ever seen on screen; a performance so perfectly measured and mesmerising that I missed him terribly each time the camera pointed elsewhere.

Directed by Adrian Buitenhuis and Derik Murray, I Am Heath Ledger is a new documentary that celebrates Ledger’s life as an actor, artist and icon. Featuring interviews with those who knew him best personally and professionally, I Am Heath Ledger aims to provide an intimate look through the actor’s own camera as he films and often performs in his own personal journey.

I know that one day I’ll sit down and watch this documentary. That day will just take a little or a lot longer to arrive. There’s just no telling.

Naomi Watts, Emile Hirsch, Djimon Hounsou, Ben Mendelsohn and Brokeback Mountain (2005) director Ang Lee are some of the friends and colleagues featured, along with family.

I Am Heath Ledger Release Dates: April 23rd, 2017 (US)…
