28 YEARS LATER (2025): The Things I Liked…

Having only watched 28 Days Later (2002), the first movie in the trilogy that includes 28 Weeks Later (2007) and now, 28 Years Later (2025), just a few weeks ago, I had high hopes for the latest instalment. How could I not after the memorable trailers starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer and Alfie Williams?

Written by Alex Garland of Ex Machina (2004) and directed by Danny Boyle, 28 Years Later is my favourite of the three films set in a United Kingdom that has been taken over by a mysterious and incurable zombie virus, leaving just a handful of survivors.

It’s the great pacing, musical score, performances (by Comer in particular), visual effects, shooting style, cinematography and editing that places 28 Years Later at number one, for me. I appreciated the editing so much that for the first time in all my years of loving film, I took note of the editor’s (Jon Harris) name.

I’m glad that even though 28 Years Later is partly a horror film, I didn’t see anything that resulted in nightmares. And, truth be told, Sinners may still be my favourite film of 2025, so far, but I’d say that 28 Years Later is at least in the top five.

Watch Garland and Boyle’s latest for all the reasons above, and one more: the stunning alpha chase sequence. You know how much I enjoy a well-choreographed chase sequence.

Happy Film loving,

28 DAYS LATER (2002): The Things I Liked…

The Alex Garland-written/directed Ex Machina (2014) is in the top three of my favourite science fiction movies of all time.

Had I known that Garland was the writer of sci-fi/zombie classic, 28 Days Later (2002), my general aversion to scary movies aside, I’d probably have seen the film years earlier.

Directed by Danny Boyle (another point for why I ought to have seen the film already), it was my love for the trailers of the recently released 28 Years Later (2025), the third movie in the series, and a little convincing from a fellow movie fan that finally made me do the thing.

And as I did so, I soon learned that 28 Days Later is a classic for a reason. It’s no wonder Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris’s careers seemed to only ascend after this film, a well-told story about a mysterious and incurable virus that takes over the UK, leaving only a few survivors in search of safety.

A good time is what I had as this movie played. And, yes, for a brief moment, my sensitive soul may have had some regret about starting 28 Days Later, specifically when things took a dark turn towards the end. However, I remain glad I saw it all because I was fully engaged throughout. The great use of music contributed to this, along with all the performances, including my favourite line:

He’s still waiting for Marks & Spencer to reopen.’

I love it because the comic timing is fantastic, and it’s so very relatably British.

Watch 28 Days Later, if you haven’t already. And certainly because 28 Years Later is quite worth it.

Happy Film Loving,

T2 – TRAINSPOTTING 2: New Trailer From Danny Boyle, Starring Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle…

T2 – Trainspotting 2 (2017), Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner
T2 – Trainspotting 2 (2017), Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner

The full trailer for T2 – Trainspotting 2, the sequel to the 1999 cult classic Trainspotting is here; with Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, Ewan Bremner and more reprising their original roles.

Funny, fast, scary, but not in the horror movie sense (thank goodness), and dramatic are words that fit.

I also just love that ‘man on chair off the roof’ moment at 1:03. I’d love to know how that was shot. I imagine with plenty of very soft padding at the end of quite a short drop. Come on January!

T2 – Trainspotting Release Dates: January 27th, 2017 (UK); February 10th, 2017 (US)…

The teaser trailer for the sequel to Trainspotting (1996) is here. Directed by Danny Boyle and starring Ewan McGregor,  Robert Carlyle, Jonny Lee Miller and Ewen Bremner, this new teaser, I can promise, is not as pointless as the previous one. For there is something to get the imagination going.

In all honesty, I can barely remember what happens in the first film. Something to do with having actually never seen it, perhaps. Or I may have forgotten watching it because 1996 was decades ago.

I’m looking forward to finding out about all the hype before the second instalment gets here. Something tells me that, regardless of the title, the movie probably has very little to do with actual train spotting. I could be wrong, of course, since I’m not even sure that I’ve seen the first film.

STEVE JOBS (2015): Time For The Michael Fassbender Interpretation

Steve Jobs (2015), Kate Winslet, Michael Fassbender
Steve Jobs (2015), Kate Winslet, Michael Fassbender

Two of my favourite UK actors, Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet star in the story of Apple co-founder, Steve Jobs.

Like many, I’m already very aware of the story of the celebrated visionary, but of course, I’ll watch the film if only to take in the artistry of the actors, the magic of dialogue king/screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin and director Danny Boyle.

Another highlight is Steve Jobs the appearance of one of my favourite funny men, Seth Rogen in another serious role, this time as the other half of the Apple founding team, Steve Wozniak.

Steve Jobs Release Dates: October 23rd (US), November 13th (UK)…

Happy Steve Jobs 🙂
