THE SIEGE OF JADOTVILLE (2016): Good Movie…

Until The Siege Of Jadotville, I’d only seen Jamie Dornan in one movie; the hugely successful but not particularly well-regarded Fifty Shades Of Grey (2015). Since the latter film, I’ve been looking forward to finding out what else Dornan could do in front of the camera.

Directed by Richie Smyth and set in early 1960s Congo, The Siege Of Jadotville is based on the true story of Irish UN Commander Pat Quinlan and his leadership of 150 Irish soldiers against 3000 French and Belgian Mercenaries.

My enjoyment of this movie isn’t because I was blinded by the beautiful Irish accents, for, the entire cast delivered good performances and there’s a beautifully tense scene at a bar quite early on. There’s also the cinematography and how well Smyth and his team rose to the challenge of capturing military combat.

By the end of the movie, I was left inspired to fight my corner when necessary, happy to have found my favourite Jamie Dornan movie to date, and reminded to be careful of underestimating my opponents, even when the odds appear to be in my favour.

Watch The Siege Of Jadotville, which also stars Jason O’Mara, Mark Strong, Danny Sapani and Sam Keeley – to name just a few, because there is certainly more to enjoy than just the lovely Irish accents.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Fifty Shades Darker (2017).

Anastasia Steele and her tormented billionaire boyfriend Christian Grey are back, in writer E.L. James’s Fifty Shades of Grey sequel.

Starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, Fifty Shades Darker has Steele dealing with the anger and envy of Christian’s past loves, while Grey wrestles with his inner demons.

Trailer 1

I’ll be watching because Christian intrigues me. I also want to see what director James Foley can achieve, given what we know about the quality of the source material.

THE 9TH LIFE OF LOUIS DRAX (2016): New Trailer From Jamie Dornan, Aaron Paul, Sarah Gadon…

The 9th Life of Louis Drax is a new thriller starring Jamie Dornan, Aaron Paul and Sarah Gadon.

Directed by Alexandre Aja and based on the novel by Liz Jensen, a young boy’s mysterious near-fatal fall and what happens to the psychologist who works with him is at the centre of the story.

After watching the trailer, I really want to know if the boy was pushed. I’d also like to know who the bad guy really is. Aaron Paul’s character or Jamie Dornan’s? Or, the mother played by Sarah Gadon?

Questions, questions…

Set in WII, Anthropoid, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan’s new movie is based on the true story of the mission to assassinate one of Adolf Hitler’s generals, Reinhard Heydrich.

The trailer looks good so far. As such, I’m intrigued. As for actually watching? That will happen because of Cillian Murphy. I’m also open to seeing Dornan in something good.

Toby Jones, Charlotte Le Bon and Anna Geislerová also feature.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY (2015): There Is Something I Liked…

Fifty Shades Of Grey (2015), Jamie Dornan (Christian Grey)
Fifty Shades Of Grey (2015), Jamie Dornan (Christian Grey)

Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan star in Fifty Shades Of Grey, the Sam Taylor Johnson directed film adaptation of E.L. James’ best selling book of the same name.

There has been plenty of well-publicised negative feedback about the quality of writing in the book and subsequently, the film. Yet, all that seems to have caused minimal damage to the movie’s overall commercial success.

Clearly the story of the masochistic relationship between a university student (Anastasia Steele) and a handsome, rich businessman (Christian Grey) is just too appealing. Thanks to some rather steamy content and a definitely mysterious Mr. Grey; a man audiences can’t help but be desperate to understand.

For me, there are no particularly stellar performances in the film. I remember laughter escaping my lips in response to some of the dialogue. Had the book been better written, perhaps the movie would be too. Nevertheless, by the end, I did find myself quite curious about the tortured Mr. Grey. Though absolutely not curious enough to ever pick up the book(s), in the event that the follow-up films were to be cancelled.

Whether it’s the love story, sexy content or even the dialogue, if you’re planning to watch, I hope you’ll find one or two things in the film that are worth the experience.

Oddly enough, my favourite thing about Fifty Shades Of Grey is probably not what one might expect. For it is the following line delivered by Christian Grey within the first ten minutes.

The harder I work the more luck I seem to have’.
