Directed and co-written by Chloé Zhao, Hamnet is the story of the events in the life of highly regarded English playwright, William Shakespeare; a time that inspired his timeless masterpiece, Hamlet.

Paul Mescal, Jessie Buckley, Zac Wishart and Joe Alwyn star.

An emotional slog is what this looks like. Still, I’m interested to see a promising dramatisation of part of Shakespeare’s personal story. One that’s produced by Sam Mendes and Steven Spielberg, no less.

I’m going to re-familiarise myself with Hamlet, before watching this. Until then, a thought:

‘Art, beautiful art, that wondrous gift with the glorious power to help us heal in countless ways.’

Will you be watching?

James Lintern, James Lintern, Joe Alwyn, Justine Mitchell, Eva Wishart, Emily Watson, David Wilmot, Dainton AndersonLouisa Harland, Smylie Bradwell and Faith Delaney also star.

Hamnet Release Dates: December 12th 2025 (US); January 9th, 2026

THE BRIDE! (2026): New Trailer From Maggie Gyllenhaal, Starring Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Jake Gyllenhaal…

Bride! (2026), Christian Bale, Warner Bros. Pictures

Maggie Gyllenhaal is the director of Bride! A new Frankenstein movie set in 1930s Chicago. One in which Frankenstein gets a companion after asking Dr. Euphronius for help.

Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley and Jake Gyllenhaal are among the key cast.

Sure, I’m a little concerned that ‘musical’ is part of the categorisation, but I’ll let that go for now, because the cast is super and this looks like it could be good, and not too scary.

It appears that sweet vengeance is on the cards, Frankenstein and his Bride, and I’m not mad about it.

Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Julianne Hough, John Magaro, Jeannie Berlin, Louis Cancelmi, Matthew Maher, Sofía Ko and Ben Elaine Apruzzese also star.

The Bride! release Dates: March 6th, (US & UK)…

I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS (2020): The Thing I Liked…

I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020), Jessie Buckley, Netflix

There are some movies I’ll start watching, realise they’re terrible and quit within ten or fifteen minutes. Writer/director Charlie Kaufman’s latest drama/thriller, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, is not that kind of movie. One might say it’s worse because I’d hoped to like it far more than I did.

I expected more because I enjoyed Anomalisa (2015), and had hoped that I’m Thinking of Ending Things would be similarly pleasing and thought-provoking. It may well be thought-provoking for some, but post-viewing, it did not inspire me to think anything significant, except ‘what a waste of two hours,’ particularly since the peculiar happenings that inspired me to watch the movie in the first place never get explained.

Kaufman’s story of a young woman who comes to question everything she thought she knew about her new boyfriend, upon arriving at his parent’s secluded farm is a film that may have fans raving on about the way it explores loneliness, death, sanity and so on. Yet, I for one didn’t want to work as hard and have as much patience as I’m Thinking of Ending Things requires of its audience.

By the third or fourth time that Jessie Buckley’s character says the words ‘I’m thinking of ending things‘, the film had lost me, and I wanted to stop watching; yet I needed to see how the story would end.

Buckley, Toni Colette, David Thewlis and Jessie Plemons all perform brilliantly. Still, none of it proved enough for me. Regardless of the ‘stylish’ way the story is edited and told; the scares and other creative choices, it just didn’t result in a satisfying experience for me. Instead it felt incomplete.

I’m sure that very serious fans of Kaufman will likely enjoy this the most. For everyone else, sure, give it a chance if you’re SUPER curious.

Based on a true story, Misbehaviour is a new drama about a group of women who plan to disrupt the 1970 Miss World beauty competition in London.

Starring Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jessie Buckley and Greg Kinnear; Misbehaviour is directed by Philippa Lowthorpe.

Knightley, Mbartha-Raw and Kinnear have me interested. I also want to see how much things have really changed since Miss World 1970. Especially so, considering what happened with Miss Universe in 2019.

Keeley Hawes, Suki Waterhouse, Emma Corrin, Rhys Ifans, Lily Travers, Lesley Manville, Phyllis Logan, Lily Newmark, Charlotte Spencer, Ruby Bentall and John Heffernan also star.

Starring Renée Zellweger, Rufus Sewell,  Bella Ramsey, Jessie Buckley, and directed by Rupert Goold; Judy is a new biography/musical about legendary performer Judy Garland, a.k.a. Frances Ethel Gumm.

Judy focuses on Garland’s winter of 1968 series of sold-out concerts in London. Goold’s film will show Garland as she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends, fans and meets Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband.

As someone who’s aware of Garland but not so much her work, especially outside of The Wizard Of Oz (1939), I look forward to being enlightened.

Furthermore, having not watched Zellweger in a movie in a while, I’m excited to see her do a great job with this role. I wonder if she’ll actually sing.

Michael Gambon, Finn Wittrock, Andy Nyman, Fenella Woolgar, Philippe Spall ,John Dagleish and Gemma-Leah Devereux also star.

Judy Release Dates: September 27th, 2019 (US); October 4th, 2019 (UK)…
