BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE (2018): The Things I Liked…

Set in a rundown hotel with a dark past, Bad Times At Hotel El Royale, the story of seven strangers with secrets to bury and one last shot at redemption is a movie I can’t say I enjoyed a lot.

There were moments of beauty, including the cinematography and the absolutely divine brown suede coat/jacket on Dakota Johnson’s character’s back. I also liked the pay-off in regards to the story of Miles Miller, the one hotel employee, and what he was found to be capable of. Yet, even though all the characters were portrayed well by the actors, it was only really Miles Miller whose story most intrigued me.

The scene in which Cynthia Erivo’s Darlene completely verbally sizes up Chris Hemsworth’s Billy Lee. That’s a great moment because of the dialogue and Billy Lee’s inability to deny the truth.

As for other things I liked quite a bit less in director Drew Goddard’s film, I didn’t enjoy the way the story was structured. As a result, I was annoyed by how pointless continuing to watch felt at times. The film’s length, pace, and the absence of a thoroughly engaging and natural flow for the entirety of the movie were the key lowlights.

I say, if you’re really curious, give Bad Times at Hotel El Royale a chance. Perhaps you’ll find much to love. For me, my mind often went to other movies I’ve seen that featured many characters, yet remained thrillingly engaging throughout. I just wish I could name an even more comparable example than Magnolia (1999) right now.

LUCY IN THE SKY (2019): New Trailer From Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, Dan Stevens, Zazie Beetz…

Lucy In The Sky (2019), Natalie Portman, Fox Searchlight Pictures

John Hamm, Natalie Portman, Zazie beetz and Dan Stevens are the stars of new sci-fi/drama Lucy In The Sky.

Directed by Noah Hawley, Lucy In The Sky is the story of a female astronaut who begins to slowly unravel and lose touch with reality, following a life-changing space mission.

The cast is good, and I’ll put aside my slight fatigue when it comes to space movies, because I’m curious about Portman’s character’s emotional and psychological journey.

Nick Offerman, Tig Notaro, Ellen Burstyn, Colman Domingo, Christopher Darga, Jeremiah Birkett and Stella Edwards also star.

TAG (2018): The Things I Liked…

Tag (2018), Jeremy Renner
Tag (2018), Jeremy Renner

I must be too sensible for this kind of fun because, as I watched director Jeff Tomsic’s male friendship comedy Tag, where former classmates play an elaborate game of tag across the country, I thought it silly for grown, middle-aged men to be playing a children’s game. Especially the way it’s played in the movie, often resulting in a notable amount of damage to the immediate surroundings.

My sensible ways aside, it’s unfortunate I wasn’t very amused throughout the film, and the only scenes that had me most engaged were the ones featuring Jeremy Renner’s character, Jerry. Particularly when he was playing the game. Renner’s stunt work, athleticism and general onscreen charisma helped make Tag that little bit more watchable.

Also starring Ed Helms, Jake Johnson and Jon Hamm, I probably would have had more fun watching Tag if I’d felt like I knew the characters more before the game commenced. What happened before we met Renner’s character sadly felt more like un-amusing filler. Besides Jerry, my favourite thing about Tag is the way it ends and the music choice just before the credits.

Even though I’m not Tag’s biggest fan, I admit that knowing the film was based on a real-life group of friends who played the game for 23 years warms my heart a little. It also has me wondering about precisely how the film is different from the whole truth.

Watch it if you’re so curious. Maybe you’ll find it more fun than I did.

BABY DRIVER (2017): The Thing I Liked…

Baby Driver (2017), Ansel Elgort
Baby Driver (2017), Ansel Elgort

Baby Driver, an Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz (2007) written/directed action movie about a young getaway driver, one who is forced to take part in a heist that’s doomed to fail isn’t a bad film. I just didn’t love it.

The film’s style and music are loud and fun, especially if you like the songs. The whole production, stylistically, is quite the achievement. Plus, it’s generally an entertaining experience.

Nevertheless, I found it quite forgettable. This is partly because I’m not exactly the key target demographic. I feel that there was room for the story to work better. For example, without spoiling anything, my biggest issue with Baby Driver is the main ‘change of heart’ at the end. I just didn’t buy it for the character involved, not even for a second.

What I liked most about Wright’s movie is the moment (s) when Elgort’s character starts to run. After all, I have always been quite partial to a good running sequence. It’s the height of thrills/suspense, is it not, particularly during a chase?

Baby Driver is one you watch if you’re curious enough.
