Starring Marlon Wayans, Regina Hall and Dennis Haysbert , Naked is all about a soon-to-be groom who is nervous about his big day and is forced to relive the same nerve-wracking hours over and over again until he gets things right on his wedding day.

Directed by  Michael Tiddes, I want to see this one because I have fond memories of Wayans after watching Senseless (1998) in my early youth.

I also actually like this trailer. It seems to get more and more amusing with each viewing. It appears that the magic is in the way he gives up.

Loretta Devine, Cory Hardrict and Dave Sheridan also star.

Girls Trip is the latest movie from Malcolm D. Lee; writer and director of two good movies The Best Man (1999) and The Best Man Holiday (2013).

Starring Jada Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish, Girls Trip is the story of a road trip with four childhood best friends. One where (according to the original Rotten Tomatoes’ synopsis) at some point a betrayal is revealed.

Now that there may not be a betrayal story after all, I’m still looking forward to finding out just how different this will be compared to The Best Man.

Whatever the similarities and differences, I’m sure that Girls Trip will be good because The Best Man (1999) and The Best Man Holiday (2013) were fun.

WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS (2016): The Thing I Liked…

Starring Morris Chestnut, Regina Hall, Romany Malco, Theo Rossi, Michael Kenneth Williams and Jaz Sinclair; the Jon Cassar-directed When The Bough Breaks is a movie that had some promise. This particular story of a surrogate mother becoming dangerously obsessed with the biological father certainly isn’t the best of this genre. 

The movie had me doubting things quite early on. Especially when I noticed the overly dramatic music used to make Theo Rossi’s character seem more menacing and dangerous. All it did for me was point out what was lacking in the film, script and performance-wise.

The best performances in the movie came from Hall, Chestnut, Malco and Michael Kenneth Williams. In the end, what’s unfortunate is that none of it proved enough to make When The Bough Breaks particularly noteworthy. I ended up enjoying some of the cinematography more than I did the story and characters. Especially the shots of that lake house. I’d love to go there!

Cassar’s movie is one you watch if you really must. Otherwise, the likelihood is that only those relatively new to movies/films of this genre, or big fans of at least one of the stars involved will likely rate it more highly. If you think I’m wrong, do share your thoughts in the comments below.

‘Lust’ Trailer

Written/directed by Jack Cassar, the subject matter intrigues me.. There’s been a few scary stories in the media about relationships between surrogates and couples falling apart. 

As the trailers played, I couldn’t help but think that surely, both parties signed a contract, which would mean such madness shouldn’t get so far. Then again, I remember that the law has never been perfect. Maybe I’ll learn a thing or two by watching.

People Places Things is the brainchild of writer/director, James C. Strouse. It’s also a film that does a good and entertaining job of navigating that complicated space between a significant breakup and the next potential relationship.

Starring Jermaine Clement, Regina Hall, Stephanie Allynne and Jessica Williams; Strouse’s comedy possesses a kooky and pleasantly offbeat quality. A quality that can be partly attributed to the limbo state a few of the characters find themselves in, plus the unapologetic directness and honesty in the way they communicate with each other.

The things that make People Places Things good remind me of my favourite sitcom,  Peep Show (2003-2015). Peeps Show is a British comedy series in which the audience hears both the dialogue spoken, but also the internal dialogue of the show’s two leads – everything they think but never dare say out loud, with very entertaining results.

I say, watch People Places Things for a cast that is amply gifted with good comic timing; the chance to see Regina Hall in a refreshingly different type of role; to discover the talents of Jermaine Clement and because People Places Things is good and funny.
