SICARIO (2015): For The Performances, Music, Cinematography & Tension

Set in the US/Mexico border area in the middle of the escalating war on drugs; Emily Blunt plays a ‘fish out of water’ FBI agent recruited by Josh Brolin’s Matt Graver. Benicio Del Toro’s character is the mysterious consultant, Alejandro who Graver brings along for the ride.

Bristling with expertly captured tension’ is one way to describe Sicario; whether it’s the tensions between law enforcement and the criminals or the tensions between the film’s main characters. Sicario is excellently scored, filled with stunning visuals and notable performances, especially from Blunt and Del Toro.

As for the things I wish were different about the movie, director Denis Villeneuve’s film has a few periods that had me wishing for more things to happen. I’m sure that when little seemed to be taking place action/drama-wise, those moments were true representations of what days can be like for the main characters involved. Yet, unfortunately, for me, said moments just made my mind wander elsewhere.

Overall, Sicario is a very good movie. Just don’t expect continuous action/drama. For this is neither Training Day (2001) nor End Of Watch (2012); both great films, obviously.

Other key characters are played by Daniel Kaluuya, Victor Garber, Jon Bernthal and Jeffrey Donovan. Watch it because it’s good.

Here’s a reminder of the film’s excellent trailer.

TERM LIFE (2016): New Trailer Starring Hailee Seinfeld, Bill Paxton, Vince Vaughn…

Vince Vaughn has an intriguing new movie and it also stars Bill Paxton, Hailee Steinfeld, Jon Favreau and Taraji P. Henson.

I’m extra hopeful because of John Favreau, Hailee Steinfeld and Bill Paxton’s involvement. Favreau, because of his work in Chef (2014) and  I Love You, Man (2009), Steinfeld for True Grit (2010) and Paxton because of what he achieved with 2 Guns (2013). And he’s just generally very good.

A BIGGER SPLASH (2016): New Trailer Starring Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, Ralph Fiennes…

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, A Bigger Splash is a new mystery/crime/drama starring Matthias Schoenaertz, Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson and Ralph Fiennes.

I rather like the vibe of the trailer but not just because it seems to be set in sunny Italy.

The music, editing and the little we know about the characters, plus the tensions so far also have me mighty curious.

At this stage, it’s probably a safe bet that for the characters of A Bigger Splash, things are unlikely to end well. Additionally, Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) randomly came to mind I need to re-watch that movie.

THE NICE GUYS (2016): New Trailer From Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling…

Something very interesting and starring Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling and Kim Basinger is coming for all you crime/mystery/thriller fans.

Directed by Shane Black and set in the 1970s, it looks like The Nice Guys are bringing great dialogue, fun antics, good music and some welcome twists and turns to keep us guessing.

All we need now is for the next trailer to please not spoil the entire film by revealing too much. The amount of story already shown in this version feels just right.

Matt Bomer, Keith David and Margaret Qualley also star.

Release Date (s): May 20th, 2016 (US), June 3rd, 2016 (UK)…

DOPE (2015): For The Cleverness, Comedy, Music & Style

Dope (2015), Kiersey Clemons, Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori
Dope (2015), Kiersey Clemons, Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori

Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori and Kiersey Clemons play the three main characters of rick Famuyiwa’s letest, Dope. Blake Anderson, Kimberly Elise, rapper, A$ap Rocky, Zoe Kravitz and De’aundre Bonds make up some of the key supporting cast.

I’ve watched several of write/director Rick Famuyiwa’s films in the past. One of them being The Wood (1999); a movie similar to Dope in the way that it’s a comedy/drama that tells the story of high school friends growing up in one of America’s toughest neighbourhoods, Inglewood, California.

The beauty with Dope is in the complexity and cleverness of the story, the vibrant cinematography and the way Famuyiwa’s movie feels like a celebration of the smarts of the high school geek.

Considering where the film takes place, naturally, there are some tense and hair raising moments. Moments that will have everyone that has never lived in a similar neighbourhood counting their lucky stars.

The good news is that Dope manages to remain positive and an authentic and fun film experience. One that steers clear of becoming far too grim.

Yes, you’ll probably feel grateful as you watch, but what you’ll remember most are the colours, the funny and clever script, the positive/uplifting music and the seldom celebrated smarts of the geek.

Watch it because it’s good.
