New comedy Ode To Joy stars Martin Freeman, Morena Baccarin, Jake Lacy and Melissa Rauch.

A Jason Winer-directed film, at the centre of the story is Charlie. (Freeman). Whenever Charlie experiences strong emotions, namely joy, a sudden bout of paralysis occurs. As a result, Charlie has developed techniques to avoid excessive happiness and pleasure. It all appears to be working, but then he falls in love.

The premise is simply too interesting for me to ignore. I myself can’t quite imagine a life devoid of joy. I therefore can’t wait to see how Charlie’s story unfolds. I’d actually watch this movie right this very minute if that were an option.

Ellis Rubin, Jane Curtin, Shannon Woodward, Jackie Seiden, Adam Shapiro, Tyler Bourke, Jason Altman and Alex Perez also star.

Ode To Joy Release Dates: August 9th, 2019 (US)…

CAROL (2015): The Thing I Liked…

Carol (2015), Cate Blanchett
Carol (2015), Cate Blanchett

Set in New York in the 1950s, Carol is a story of the romantic love between an aspiring photographer and an older woman.

Directed by Todd Haynes and starring Cate Blanchett plus Rooney Mara, I enjoyed Carol quite a bit, thanks to the musical score, makeup, the look of 1950s New York and the costume design.

Carol has some well-executed tense moments, especially considering the forbidden and often unspoken nature of the love between Blanchett and Mara’s characters. I admit to finding myself feeling a little detached from the story, something I blame on the film taking too long to reveal the true cause/nature of the tensions between Carol and her husband.

I detached phase eventually ended, particularly as the feminist theme was more apparent. By which point, I felt terribly sorry for Carol and Therese, given their circumstances and society at the time.

Watch Carol for the story, because it’s beautiful, and you never know, you may be enlightened to some things. You may also be inspired to try harder with your personal style after looking at the memorable attire worn by the key characters. I was certainly inspired. That is, until the next morning when I awoke and remembered my to-do list and priorities.

THEIR FINEST (2017): New Trailer From Sam Claflin, Gemma Aterton, Bill Nighy…

Sam Claflin, Gemma Aterton and Bill Nighy are the stars of Their Finest, a Lone Schefig-directed drama/comedy/romance set during World War II.

The story focuses on a British film crew tasked with making a propaganda film after the Blitzkrieg to help boost morale.

I’ll be tuning in for the comedy, and to witness the sexism of the times. I’m not quite in the mood for the romance just now, no doubt that’s going to change, I’m certain of it.

Their Finest Release Dates: March 24th, 2017 (US); April 21st, 2017 (UK)…

MISS SLOANE (2016): New Trailer Starring Jessica Chastain, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jake Lacy…

Miss Sloane (2016), Jessica Chastain
Miss Sloane (2016), Jessica Chastain

Miss Sloane is the story of an ambitious lobbyists’s efforts to pass gun control legislation in the United states.

Starring Jessica Chastain, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jake Lacy, the movie is directed by John Madden of Shakespeare In Love (1998) and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011).

I was really wanting to be more excited about this film after learning of the subject matter. However, this trailer doesn’t have me as desperate to see the movie as I’d hoped.

Perhaps my current lack of enthusiasm will be proven misplaced. I’m sure the knowledge that there’s currently very little, if any success in the US where gun control legislation is concerned certainly doesn’t help matters.

In the mean time, I say bring on that time in the future when the gun control legislation that’s desperately needed is finally a reality.

LOVE THE COOPERS (2015): The Things I Liked…

Christmas With The Coopers (2015), Olivia Wilde, Jake Lacy
Christmas With The Coopers (2015), Olivia Wilde, Jake Lacy

I would describe Love The Coopers as less like Elf (2003) and more like ABC TV series, Brothers & Sisters.

Directed by Jessie Nelson and starring John Goodman, Diane Keaton, Ed Helms, Olivia Wilde and Steve Martin,  Love the Coopers is one of those holiday films that reminds you that every family has unpleasant tensions and challenging relationships. Nevertheless, the good news is, in this film, the tense moments are wisely interspersed with humour and cheer.

The character Wilde plays is my favourite, partly because I find Wilde rather likeable in real life. Also, I relate most to aspects of her character, above all the others.

I wanted to watch something that didn’t demand too much from me, and that’s exactly what I got. Love the Coopers is unlikely to make my list of top 10 favourite Christmas movies, but it is easy, relaxing viewing with a side of romance – and surely, one can always make a little time for something like that.

Anthony Mackie, Jake Lacy, Amanda Seyfried and Marisa Tomei also star.
