Read my spoiler-free movie review of Gringo (2018)

In dark comedy Gringo, which stars Charlize Theron, David Oyelowo and Joel Edgerton, Oyelowo is Harold Soyinka, a former law-abiding citizen who, in his battle to survive, finds himself a wanted criminal.

Directed by Nash Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried, Thandie Newton and Sharlto Copley also star.

I’m looking forward to seeing Oyelowo in a comedy role because this trailer is fun. Also, Copley and Theron are usually great in comedy roles.

It’s certainly not a bad thing that something about this trailer reminds me of We’re the Millers (2013), a rather fun comedy.

2016 has come with another movie about forbidden love based on race.

First, we had Loving set in 1950s Virginia, USA – a true story which stars Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton. Today we have A United Kingdom, another true story of the love between African royalty (Prince Seretse Khama of Botswana) and a non-royal caucasian woman from London, England.

As is the case with Loving I’m looking forward to watching love win in A United Kingdom. Directed by Amma Asante of Belle (2013) I’m excited for my faith in humanity to be renewed once more.

Jack Davenport, Arnold Oceng, Laura Carmichael and Charlotte Hope also star.

Starring Lupita N’Yongo, David Oyelowo and Madina Nalwanga, Queen of Katwe is the true story of Phiona Mutesi, a Ugandan chess player and one of the first titled female players in Ugandan chess history.

I love stories about people doing extraordinary things, whatever their age. It’s even better if the achievement is greater than what most people believe to be possible. For that would be a reminder to never let another person dictate what is possible for you or anyone else who dares to have a dream.

I know very little about chess, and chess has only a small amount to do with why I’ll be tuning in.

Ntaire Guma Mbaho Mwine and Russel Savadier also star with Mira Nair as director.

Today’s trailer is one that I wish I could get more excited about, but there remains one specific thing that just won’t let me.

The thing I’m referring to is the quality of the prosthetics on Zoe Saldana’s face. I simply refuse to believe that Nina Simone’s cheeks were ever that motionless as she spoke.

There are of course, other issues fans of Simone’s music have expressed about this movie. For example, the idea that someone like Viola Davis might have been a better option – for reasons beyond resemblance and Davis’ notable talents and range. I can’t say I disagree with the idea of Davis in this role. The woman is gifted. For me, personally, the entire movie is more likely to be a complete waste of time if it isn’t possible to suspend my disbelief because the prosthetics don’t look good.

I guess I’m going to have to find a good Nina Simone documentary instead. For now, though, it’s time to remind myself of why she’s very important to so many and listen to her wonderful voice and music.

INTERSTELLAR (2014): As Expected, Christopher Nolan Did It Again. It’s Good

I finally did it. I watched Interstellar! The nearly three hour running time is part of the reason why I hadn’t yet. Plus, I believe it important to be in the right mood for a particular type of film before watching.

From Christopher Nolan, the director who brought us the hugely successful Inception (2010) and the recent Batman trilogy, the cast for Interstellar includes Matthew McConaughey, Ann Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, to name just a few.

Nolan has once more delivered a memorable film. One that features some stunning space imagery, a handful of nail biting/tense moments – and at the heart, a powerful and extraordinary father/daughter love story.

If you happen to be into astronomy and science, you’ll likely love this film even more, because it covers space exploration for the purpose of saving human kind from extinction – and it’s not afraid to dive into the science.

Like Inception (2010), Interstellar deals with a few non-simplistic concepts and therefore requires your full attention. I think I managed to keep up quite well, even though science isn’t my subject. That said, please be so kind as to not test my knowledge because I will fail. Thank you.
